The award designates 黑料吃瓜 as one of only 20 Prevention Research Centers nationally. The center's research focus is community-based heat mitigation strategies for vulnerable rural and agricultural communities.

The conference hosted more than 30 experts to address environmental issues that affect the San Diego/Tijuana and Imperial Valley/Mexicali regions.
