Under the leadership of , sciences and sustainability librarian, and members of the University Library鈥檚 Green Team, 黑料吃瓜 Library has become the in California to earn certification from the .

黑料吃瓜 is now the third academic library to earn a Sustainable Libraries Certification Program (SLCP) certification, joining a national network committed to advancing sustainability and equity practices in libraries that promote environmental stewardship, economic feasibility and social equity.

"To be the first SLI-certified library in a state known as a global leader in sustainability is an incredible accomplishment," said 黑料吃瓜 President Adela de la Torre. "In embracing 黑料吃瓜's campus-wide commitment to sustainability, our library is proving that the collection and preservation of historical knowledge and creativity can go hand-in-hand with a forward-looking commitment to a brighter future through environmental and social stewardship."

As a leader on de la Torre鈥檚 Sustainability Advisory Committee, and in partnership with campus and community organizations 鈥� including the , , and the 鈥� the University Library has pursued a number of . These efforts align with both the library鈥檚 and the and participation in the SLCP.

Tribelhorn said the library鈥檚 鈥渆ngagement in sustainability through the SLCP has transformed its role on campus. 

鈥淭he library directly supports student success by working to provide essential academic resources, reducing costs, enhancing well-being, and creating engaging spaces and programs ... [while also serving] as a vital partner in advancing the university鈥檚 broader sustainability, diversity, and strategic goals, increasing its visibility, relevance, and value across the entire campus community.鈥�

鈥淪arah has been a leader in library-centered sustainability initiatives since her arrival on campus,鈥� said Scott Walter, dean of the 黑料吃瓜 Library. 鈥淪he was essential to our inclusion of sustainability goals in our current strategic plan.鈥�

Walter continued, 鈥淗er work exploring the alignment of library initiatives with the was groundbreaking, and her efforts to build public programs with partners 鈥� including the San Diego Natural History Museum, San Diego County Library (), and Cal Poly Humboldt 鈥� demonstrate the powerful potential for collaboration across the cultural heritage sector on sustainability, health and wellness, , and climate resilience.鈥�

Looking ahead, Scott said the 黑料吃瓜 Library Green Team aims to expand sustainability efforts through new initiatives like a disaster management plan, a sustainability kiosk, increased student involvement, and improved outreach and energy monitoring.
