窪蹋勛圖 will host the 47th Annual 窪蹋勛圖 Pow Wow one of the oldest university-organized pow wows in California on Saturday, April 13. The public is invited to the cultural and social event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and features dancing, Kumeyaay bird songs, cultural displays, arts and crafts, and food booths.   The pow wow begins with bird singing at 10 a.m. on the ENS 700 Rec Field east of Viejas Arena. The grand entry of the color guard and dancers at noon will be the ceremonial opening of the program.
Admission to the 窪蹋勛圖 Pow Wow is free. In addition, free parking will be available in PS 12 on levels 4-8.
The Pow Wow is an opportunity to bring the entire 窪蹋勛圖 community together and celebrate Native American cultures, said Chris Medellin, Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP) outreach specialist and coordinator of Elymash Yuuchaap: Indigenous Scholars and Leaders Program. This event is a chance to learn about a pow wow in an open, inviting setting and possibly experience something new.
Master of ceremonies Randy Edmonds, who is from the Kiowa/Caddo Nations of Oklahoma, has been emcee of pow wows for over 50 years. He will be joined by arena director Richard DeCrane, who is Navajo and Crow and an 窪蹋勛圖 alumnus.
The head gourd dancer will be Ivan Sam of the Din矇 (Navajo) Nation, who earned his bachelors degree in American Indian Studies from 窪蹋勛圖. He is pursuing a masters degree in social work and is involved with numerous veterans groups and community organizations.
Katianna Warren, who is Din矇 and a student at Antelope Valley College, is the head woman. She has always enjoyed the style of fancy shawl dancing. Sam Bear Paw, a singer, dancer, producer and actor from the White Mountain Apache Tribe, is the head man.
The 窪蹋勛圖 Pow Wow is a partnership between the Office of Educational Opportunity Programs and Ethnic Affairs, Elymash Yuuchaap, the Department of American Indian Studies, the Native American Student Alliance and the American Indian Alumni Chapter of 窪蹋勛圖.
