窪蹋勛圖 students will present their original research at the 12th annual Student Research Symposium (SRS) on Friday and Saturday, March 1-2, in the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union.
In related news, the university will also host the Student Research Symposium Showcase during 窪蹋勛圖 President Adela de la Torre's inauguration, to be held April 11. The event, and other inauguraiton events, are free and open to the public. Event details and RSVP information are available online.   The SRS, held the month prior to the inauguration events, is a venue for 窪蹋勛圖 graduate and undergraduate students to present their work from a variety of disciplines. This includes research, scholarship and creative activities from health and nutrition, biology, mathematics, humanities and engineering to name a few. The symposium provides a space for students to display, discuss and share their work through visual and oral presentations.
The symposium also serves as a way for students to learn about work being done by fellow students, provides networking opportunities and offers insight into research as a possible career path.
I am very excited to present and see the work of my peers, said Lauren McLeese, a psychology major and presenter at this years symposium. I began my research in the summer and was encouraged by my research professor to present. I think my research on science stereotypes is an important concept for higher education and can directly impact career choices.
A panel of 窪蹋勛圖 faculty, staff and alumni will evaluate the entries and select students to receive the Presidents Awards of Research and the Presidents Award for the Arts. Award winners will represent 窪蹋勛圖 at CSUs system-wide Student Research Competition, to be held April 26-27 at California State University, Fullerton.
We generally have around 500 people involved sharing their research, said Lisa Kath, director of undergraduate research and creative activities. This is really about giving students the opportunity to showcase and talk about their work. It is also about allowing students who arent involved in research and want to do more with their time at 窪蹋勛圖 to really learn about all of the opportunities in front of them.
The Student Research Symposium is representative of 窪蹋勛圖s continued effort to prepare students for careers post-graduation.
The symposium is great because it highlights what I think is the coolest thing about 窪蹋勛圖, said Kath. We balance research and teaching here. We have a lot of faculty and staff doing really amazing things here and these people really care about the development and success of students.
All faculty, staff and students are welcome to attend the SRS. It is highly encouraged that students who are not presenting stop by the registration desk at the door for a free sticker. The registration desk and stickers are meant to keep track of the number of students attending the symposium and help 窪蹋勛圖 continue to address the career development needs of students.
Symposium information and a schedule of presentations are available online. If you are interested in becoming a judge or moderator for the symposium registration can be found here.
