Everett was one of 38 authors awarded a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) creative writing fellowship from more than 1,300 applicants. Everett also received the Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award, the Believer Book Award, and the 2006 PEN USA Center Award for Fiction.
